Hayes Named Assistant Head Coach for All-Star Game
Forest City, N.C. - Forest City Owls skipper Matt Hayes was named an assistant head coach to the American All-Star team on Tuesday for the annual Coastal Plain League All-Star game set for next Tuesday in Asheboro, North Carolina.

Hayes, an assistant coach from Limestone College, is in his third season with the Spartanburg-Forest City franchise and will be the assistant head coach for the first time in the CPL All-Star game.

“It’s an honor that I must give the credit to my players,” said Hayes. “They are the ones who won in the first half. It’s an honor for the organization. It should be a lot of fun.”

Hayes guided the Owls to a franchise first-ever West Division Championship with a 17-10 record in the first-half.

“The players are the ones who won the games,” Hayes said. “It’s a great opportunity for me and I think it will be great a great experience.”

“Matt should be commended for a job well done,” said Owls’ General Manager James Wolfe. “The organization and the town of Forest City is proud of what the Owls have accomplished so far.”

Florence Coach Wes Davis will be the head coach of the American All-Stars after directing his RedWolves to a 20-7 record in the first-half and a South Division first-half title.

Serving as the assistant coaches for the American squad will be Tim Murray (Asheboro), Tim Medlin (Columbia), Robbie Wilson (Outer Banks), Daniel Hersey (Wilmington), and Dave Carfley (Petersburg).

The 2008 Coastal Plain League All-Star Festivities will feature several attractions during the two days. During Fan Fest on Monday, July 21, fans can look forward to the All-Star Home Run Derby, while on Tuesday, July 22, the main attraction will be the 2008 CPL All-Star Game. Both will be held at the home of the Asheboro Copperheads, McCrary Park in Asheboro, N.C. The Coastal Plain League is the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league, now in its twelfth season. Featuring 14 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, the CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with wooden bats during the summer months. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts.
