Owls Finalize Coaching Staff
The Forest City Owls have finalized the coaching staff for the 2010 season. Mike Ranson will be returning to the Owls to coach the pitching staff for the second year in a row, while Brant Combs will serve as assistant coach in his first season with the franchise. The team will be lead by Matt Hayes, who is in his fifth season as a head coach in the Coastal Plain League.

Ranson led the Owls pitching staff to a 3.27 ERA last year, fourth best in the Coastal Plain League. His pitchers accounted for 495 strikeouts and allowed only 172 walks. Under his guidance pitchers Spencer Patton and Ryan Arrowood shared the CPL’s Defensive Player of the Year award. He is currently an assistant coach at Limestone College in Gaffney SC.

“We are very excited to have Coach Ranson back this season” said Owls general manager James Wolfe. “He is great at working with the pitching staff, setting the rotation, and will be a real asset to Coach Hayes this season. He also is a great recruiter and will help fill out our roster. Our pitching staff was one of our biggest strengths last year and we owe much of that to Mike.”

The Owls will welcome Brant Combs as an assistant coach this season. Combs will assist Coach Ranson with the pitchers as well as help Coach Hayes with the daily tasks associated with the team. Combs is currently the Director of Baseball Operations at Missouri State University where he is working towards an MBA with an emphasis in sports management. Gardner-Webb Rallys Over Marist
Gardner-Webb pushed across six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the seventh Sunday night to rally past Marist in the final game of the 2010 North/South Challenge.

The Diamond ‘Dogs (2-5) captured their second win in a row, a did so by beating a Red Foxes team that won the MAAC Tournament last season and advanced to an NCAA Regional. Marist (2-5) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on Richard Curylo’s solo home run in the third inning, and pushed across two more runs in the sixth to go up 3-0.

Gardner-Webb led off the first, second and fourth innings with doubles, but had nothing to show for their efforts on the scoreboard.

Freshman Danny Yelverton stepped to the plate with two outs in the sixth, roping a double into right field and stealing third base to ignite Gardner-Webb’s first score of the evening. O.J. McFarland then ripped a single into left to cut the lead to 3-1, but Josh Drewery was cut down at the plate to prevent another run from scoring and ending the inning.

Matt Sapp started the decisive rally in the seventh, hammering a 1-1 pitch off the wall in left for a one-out double. Pinch hitter Jake Watts then delivered a single to left that moved Sapp to third. Watts hustled into second on an attempt to throw Sapp out at home, but Sapp did not try to advance and both men sat in scoring position.

Daniel Merck then tied the score, legging out a two-run double to left and chasing reliever Brendan Chapin from the game. Aaron Miller gave Gardner-Webb the lead for good with a shot up the middle, and Yelverton followed with his second double of the game to put runners at second and third with one out.

A sacrifice fly by Drewery gave Gardner-Webb a 5-3 lead and Ty Boyles followed immediately with a two-run home run to left for a 7-3 lead.

Reliever Brock Wilson, who came on to get the ‘Dogs out of a jam in the top of the sixth, worked past a leadoff single in the eighth to keep the Red Foxes off the board and retired Marist in order in the ninth for his first win of the season.

Wilson (1-0) also lowered his ERA to 3.12 on the season in his third appearance out of the pen. Emilio Pagan was strong in a no decision, working 5.1 innings and allowing just three earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts.

Gardner-Webb had 13 hits in the game, including seven doubles. McFarland led the way with a 3-for-4 effort and was joined by Merck (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Yelverton (2-for-3, 2 runs) and Boyles (2-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) at the top of the production sheet.

Chapin (0-3) took the loss in relief for Marist, lasting just one third of an inning and allowing three runs on three hits. Chad Gallagher was sharp in a no decision start, going 6.0 innings and allowing just one run on six hits.

Marist managed seven hits, with Bryce Nugent (2-for-4) and Jon Schwind (2-for-4, RBI) leading that effort.

The Southern teams - Gardner-Webb and Appalachian State - combined to go 5-1 in the inaugural North/South Challenge.

Gardner-Webb will travel to face No. 20 North Carolina on Tuesday, March 2 as part of a busy week of baseball. The Diamond ‘Dogs will play at USC Upstate on Wednesday, March 3, then at Wofford on Friday, March 5. GWU will then host St. Peter’s at Wofford on Saturday, March 6.
Appalachian Sweeps the North-South Challenge
Appalachian State University baseball moved to 6-0 for the first time in 19 years with a convincing 13-2 win over Niagara on the final day of the inaugural North-South Challenge on Sunday at McNair Field.

Appalachian (6-0) scored twice in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run double by David Towarnicky then opened the floodgates with a nine-run fifth to take an insurmountable 11-0 lead.

The Mountaineers sent 12 batters to the plate in the nine-run fifth. Each of the first nine ASU hitters in the inning scored and nine of the first 10 recorded base hits. Jeremy Dowdy's two-run double and Jason Wallace's three-run homer highlighted the fifth-inning onslaught.

In all, ASU banged out a season-best 15 hits while its 13 runs matched a season high also recorded versus Niagara on Friday. Towarnicky and Wes Hobson paced the 15-hit attack with three apiece while Towarnicky and Wallace drove in three runs each.

On the mound, Mountaineer starter Ryan Arrowood tossed six shutout innings near his hometown to earn the win and move to 2-0 on the young season. Dating back to a loss in his first collegiate start over a year ago, Arrowood has won 15-straight decisions, including a 12-0 stint with the Coastal Plain League's Forest City Owls last summer. Arrowood has not allowed a run while striking out 16 and walking only two in 11 innings this season.

Sunday's performance on the mound was indicative of the pitching prowess that has ASU standing at 6-0 for the first time since 1991. Through six games, the Mountaineer pitching staff boasts a miniscule 1.83 ERA and .202 opposing batting average. The Apps have also been impressive at the plate, averaging over nine runs per game. Overall, Appalachian has outscored its opponents by a combined 56-12.

The Mountaineers close out a string of seven-straight games away from home to open the season when they travel to North Carolina A&T on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium in Greensboro.
Gardner-Webb Picks Up Win Over Niagara
Brett Stackhouse fanned eight batters in 6.0 strong innings on the mound and Gardner-Webb rapped out 17 hits en route to an 11-4 win over Niagara Saturday night at McNair Field.

The Diamond ‘Dogs (1-5) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, as Ty Boyles delivered his first home run of the season – a three-run shot to left – to clear the bases. Niagara (0-5) answered with a solo home run from Ryan McCauley on the first pitch of the second inning, but the ‘Dogs added their fourth run in the bottom half of the second and plated two more in the third for a 6-2 lead.

A four-run burst in the fourth put the game away. Gardner-Webb added an insurance run in the sixth and would ride a strong bullpen effort down the stretch.

Stackhouse (1-1) threw 103 pitches and allowed just four hits in his second start of the season, lowering is ERA to 3.86 on the year. Michael Hanzlik and Adam Izokovic hurled scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth, and Conner Scarborough finished out the ninth without allowing an earned run.

Daniel Merck paced the Diamond ‘Dogs with a 4-for-4 effort at the plate and scored a run. Kurt Fulginiti (3-for-4, 3 runs) and O.J. McFarland (3-for-4, two 2B, 4 RBI) added three hits each, while Aaron Miller (2-for-4, 2 runs, RBI) and Boyles (2-for-3, HR, 3 RBI) each had two.

Senior outfielder Stefon Morris went 1-for-4 in his first career start as well.

Niagara had just five hits on the night, with Trevor Rutkowski going 2-for-4 to lead the Purple Eagles’ attack. Daniel Moriari (0-2) took the loss, scattering 17 hits and 10 earned runs in 6.1 innings of work (seven strikeouts, one walk).

Both teams will close out the first annual North/South Challenge on Sunday at McNair Field. Niagara will matchup with Appalachian State at 1 pm and Gardner-Webb will take on Marist at 5 pm. Appalachian State (6-0) topped Marist, 5-3, in Saturday's first game.
App. St. Claims Victory over Marist
David Towarnicky's three-run home run in the sixth inning proved to be the difference in Appalachian State University baseball's 5-3 win over Marist on Saturday in Game Three of the North-South Challenge at McNair Field.

With Appalachian (5-0) trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth and runners on first and second base, Towarnicky blasted a 1-0 delivery from Marist starter B.J. Martin well over the right-field wall to give ASU a 5-3 lead.

That proved to be more than enough for the Mountaineer bullpen duo of Taylor Miller and Chris Patterson, who held Marist (2-4) hitless over the final three innings to seal Appalachian's fifth-straight win to open the season.

The Mountaineers led 2-1 after five innings but the Red Foxes took their only lead of the game on a two-run homer by Michael Gallic in the top of the sixth.

Prior to the sixth, the game featured a pitchers' duel between ASU's Tyler Jackson and Marist's Martin. Jackson was forced to enter the game at the beginning of the second inning due to an arm injury sustained by Mountaineer starter Jordan Jessup. The freshman southpaw allowed just one run over four innings of his emergency stint on the mound.

Martin nearly matched Jackson pitch-for-pitch, as he surrendered only one earned run through five stanzas. The difference through five innings was an unearned run that came courtesy of Martin's own throwing error.

Appalachian managed just four hits against three Red Fox pitchers but three of the four hits led directly to ASU's five runs. In addition to Towarnicky's three-run bomb, Doug Jones drove in the first run of the game with a second-inning double and Tyler Zupcic came around to score the Apps' second run after his leadoff single in the third.

Miller earned the win to move to 2-0 on the season while Patterson picked up his second save. Martin suffered the loss to even his record at 1-1.

Appalachian looks to move to 6-0 for the first time since 1991 when it closes out action at the North-South Classic on Sunday versus Niagara. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. at McNair Field.
Marist Upends Gardner-Webb
Marist used a six-run burst in the second inning to take control of Friday night’s game at the first annual North/South Baseball Challenge at McNair Field, and took an 11-5 win over Gardner-Webb.

Marist (2-3) chased Gardner-Webb starter Jeff Howell in the second inning, sending 12 men to the plate to score six runs on five hits, three walks and two wild pitches.

The Red Foxes added a single run in the fourth and three runs on five singles in the sixth to go up 10-0. Marist

Marist starter Kyle Putnam (2-1) was dominant on the mound, holding Gardner-Webb hitless until a leadoff single up the middle by Aaron Miller to lead off the sixth inning. O.J. McFarland would break up the shutout moments later with an RBI single to left. GWU had the bases loaded with one out – but Putnam worked out of his first jam of the night with the help of a 4-6-3 double play.

Gardner-Webb (0-5) mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh against the Marist bullpen, getting three runs across on five hits. Zeke Blanton led off with a single and scored on Aaron Miller’s fielders choice to cut the lead to 10-2 – then Josh Drewery delivered a two-run, two-out single to left to make the score 10-4. Ty Boyles followed with a single and McFarland walked to load the bases, but the Runnin’ Bulldogs would see the rally snuffed out by a fly ball.

Marist added to its lead in the seventh, turning an error and a wild pitch into an 11-4 edge. GWU got an RBI groundout from Boyles in the bottom of the ninth for the final margin.

Howell (0-2) was saddled with his second loss in two career starts, working 1.2 innings and allowing six runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Putnam worked 6.0 innings for the win, allowing just two hits and one run while fanning eight (three walks).

Marist managed 12 hits, with Ryan Gauck (2-for-6, 2 RBI), John Prano (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and Bryce Nugent (2-for-3, 2 runs) leading the way.

Eight different men accounted for Gardner-Webb’s eight hits on the night.

Gardner-Webb will battle Niagara at 5 pm on Saturday in the second day of the Classic. Marist will take on undefeated Appalachian State at 1 pm at McNair Field.
App. St. Downs Niagara
Matt Andress struck out a career-high 12 and was backed by an explosive offensive display in Appalachian State University baseball's 13-4 rout over Niagara in the first game of the inaugural North-South Challenge on Friday afternoon at blustery McNair Field.

With the victory, Appalachian moved to 4-0 for the first time since 1996.

With temperatures in the low-40s at game time and a wind chill near freezing, Andress surrendered just one run on four hits and a walk while registering the career-best 12 Ks. He allowed the leadoff hitter to reach base in 4-of-6 innings but worked his way out of trouble nearly every time, giving up his only run on a solo homer by Matt Cramer in the second inning.

After Cramer's home run staked Niagara (0-4) to an early 1-0 lead, it was all ASU. Appalachian scored in each of the next five stanzas, highlighted by five runs in the bottom of the second inning and three in the fourth, to grab a commanding 12-1 advantage.

Jeremy Dowdy and Doug Jones both hit solo home runs during the onslaught. Jones, whose homer was the first of his career, also collected a game-high three RBI.

Dowdy, Jerod Faggart, Wes Hobson and David Towarnicky paced ASU's 12-hit attack with two apiece. Five of the Mountaineers' 12 hits went for extra bases.

Despite the power display, the game's defining moment came without the benefit of a base hit when Hector Crespo walked to lead off the third inning, stole second, advanced to third on a ground ball to the pitcher and made a straight steal of home to account for the Apps' lone run in the of the stanza. The highlight-reel sequence headlined a 1-for-2, two-walk, two-steal, three-run effort for the true freshman from Miami.

However, as has been the case for the entire season to date, the story of the game for Appalachian was its pitching, particularly the performance turned in by Andress (2-0). The right-handed senior is just one win shy of matching his entire win total from a season ago and sports a miniscule 0.82 ERA and .132 opponents' batting average. Friday's victory was also the 19th of his career, moving him alone into fifth place on ASU's all-time wins list.

The Mountaineers continue play at the North-South Challenge on Saturday when they take on 2009 NCAA Regional participant Marist at 1 p.m. at McNair Field.

Gardner-Webb and Appalachian State battled in a low scoring game for eight innings Tuesday, before the Mountaineers plated four runs in the ninth to take an 8-2 victory.

Gardner-Webb (0-4) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on Benji Jackson’s sacrifice fly, but Appalachian State (3-0) took the lead for good on Tyler Zupcic’s two-run single in the top of the third. David Towarnicky added a solo home run in the fourth to push the lead to 3-2 for the Mountaineers.

Aaron Miller’s second hit of the day, an RBI single in the fifth, trimmed Appalachian’s lead to 3-2, but Gardner-Webb would get no closer - as a line drive double play snuffed out a potential rally. The Mountaineers tacked on a run in the seventh on a bloop double from Zupcic that fell in right – and touched the GWU bullpen for four runs in the top half of the ninth to seal the deal.

Rookie Michael Hanzlik (0-1) worked 4.0 innings and scattered three runs and six hits for Gardner-Webb in his second career appearance (first start). Freshman righty Brock Wilson was sharp in 3.0 innings of relief work, allowing just one run on three hits. Adam Izokovic (1.1 IP, 1 hit, 3 runs) and Conner Scarborough (0.2 IP, 2 hits, 1 run) closed out the game for the Diamond ‘Dogs.

Taylor Miller (1-0) picked up the win for Appalachian State, working a predetermined 4.0 innings and allowing just one run on five hits (three strikeouts). Three Mountaineer relievers combined to allow just one more run the rest of the way and two hits.

Miller led Gardner-Webb’s seven-hit offensive effort by going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Ty Boyles finished 1-for-3 with a double – GWU’s lone extra base hit of the day.

Zupcic (3-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI) and Towarnicky (3-for-5, HR, 2 RBI) paced the Mountaineers’ 12-hit attack. Wes Hobson also drove in a pair on two hits.

Owls, United Way to Collect Blankets in February
With one of the coldest winters in recent memory upon us, the Forest City Owls and the United Way have teamed up to collect new blankets for the less fortunate in Rutherford County. The Owls are collecting blankets at their office at 353 W. Main St. Monday through Friday and at McNair Field the final two weekends in February. Anyone who donates a new blanket can purchase a general admission ticket to any college game in February at McNair Field for $3, half-off the face value. United Way will distribute the blankets to agencies in Rutherford County who will get them to people in need.

“We are pleased to work with the United Way in this worthy cause” said Owls general manager James Wolfe. “The unemployment rate is still very high here, and the temperatures have been very low. There are plenty of people that are struggling to make it through the winter and this is one small way that we can help.”

McNair Field will host five days of collegiate baseball in February, beginning with Western Carolina versus Gardner-Webb February 20 and 21. Both games will begin at 2 pm. The following weekend, Forest City will be the host for the inaugural North South Challenge. Appalachian State, Gardner-Webb, Niagara, and Marist will compete, with two games per day Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Games begin at 3 pm on Friday and 1 pm Saturday and Sunday.

“Being that we are experiencing unusually cold weather this year I am delighted that the Forest City Owls are eager to facilitate a project to help more people keep warm without impacting their heating bills” added Faye Hassell, Executive Director of the United Way of Rutherford County.

Tickets to the games in February are included in the Owls season ticket packages, as well as the Owls Bonus Books. Individual tickets are $6 for adults and $5 for seniors and youth, or $3 with a new blanket donation. For more information contact the Owls at (828) 245-0000.

Forest City to Host CPL All-Star Game
McNair Field, the home of the Forest City Owls, will host the 2010 Coastal Plain League All-Star game. The event will begin with an All-Star Fan Fest and Home Run Derby on Monday July 19 and conclude with the All-Star Game on Tuesday July 20. Forest City will host the event in the team’s third season in the league.

The event will begin with the All-Star Fan Fest Monday July 19 which will allow fans to meet the CPL All-Stars from both teams and watch the teams’ batting practices. The Home Run Derby is the centerpiece of the evening and will feature the league’s 16 best hitters in the annual contest.

The All-Star players and coaches will be treated to a lunch on Tuesday before participating in an afternoon of workouts for professional scouts. The All-Star game will take place that night, beginning at 7:05 pm.

"We're very excited to announce Forest City as the host city for our 2010 CPL All-Star Game," said league President and Commissioner. "Ken (Silver), James (Wolfe), Denise (Holland), and their staff have done such a wonderful job with that franchise that bringing the All-Star event to McNair Stadium seemed like a natural move. Wilmington did a great job with the event in 2009, and we look for the Owls to add their touch to the All-Star Game in 2010. Overall, we think it will be very successful!"

“We are tremendously honored to host this year’s All-Star Game” said Owls general manager James Wolfe. “The cities who have hosted the event in the past have done a tremendous job, and we have a lot to live up to. This is a great opportunity to showcase our facility and fan support, and we look forward to giving the people of Forest City and Rutherford County a first class event.”

The Owls are offering ticket packages to the event, which are $12 for box seats, $11 for general admission reserved seats, and $10 for general admission. Packages include tickets to both the Fan Fest and the All-Star Game.

The event marks only the third time the All-Star Game has been hosted by a West Division city; Gastonia hosted the game in 2003 and Asheboro in 2008. It is also the first time that a defending Petitt Cup champion has hosted the event.

The Forest City Owls are the 2009 Coastal Plain League Petitt Cup Champions. The Coastal Plain League is the nation’s hottest summer collegiate baseball league, heading into its 14th season. Featuring 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia, the CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with wooden bats during the summer months. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Box seat season tickets are available for $175 and general admission reserved seats are $145. Bonus books of ten undated general admission tickets are $40 and are good for the college games as well. McNair Field Named Top in the Nation
McNair Field, the home of the Forest City Owls, was named the best baseball field in the country in the category of Schools and Parks by the Sports Turf Management Association. The STMA is a no-profit professional organization of groundskeepers. McNair Field was one of 14 category winners.

McNair Field joins Lambeau Field in Green Bay WI, Community American Ballpark in Kansas City, KS, and War Memorial Stadium in Union City, TN as a winner in 2009. The best baseball field in the category of professional and college was given to Whataburger Field, home of the Houston Astros Double A affiliate Corpus Christi Hooks in Corpus Christi, TX.

McNair Field is a division of the Town of Forest City Parks and Recreation Department. Jody Wright is the Director of Parks and Recreation and Brian Blanton is the head groundskeeper at McNair Field. Matthew Gowan, Travis Keever, and Tim Blanton work with Blanton to maintain the playing surface.

The STMA uses a six judge panel to score the entry based on playability, appearance, innovations, effective use of budget, and the sound use of an agronomic program.

“The Field of the Year Award validates the intense dedication of our members,” said Kim Heck, CEO of the STMA. “Each year STMA awards no more than 14 fields, so a very small percentage of our members are winners. Brian (Blanton) and his crew are very deserving of this prestigious award for McNair Field.”

“Jody, Brian, Matthew, Travis, and Tim are well deserving of this award” said Owls general manager James Wolfe. “They work extremely hard over long hours to maintain the playing surface and keep it in the best shape possible. I would rank our field with any in baseball in the quality of its condition. We are very fortunate to have them looking after the facility.”

Owls manager Matt Hayes added ““I think that the playing surface at McNair Field is by far the finest in our league and it doesn’t surprise me at all that they should be honored for the surface,” said Hayes. “It is a very special place and the field is very special, but not as special as the people that work on it and the people that fill the stands every night.

“The job that Brian and his guys do is amazing and I couldn’t be prouder to call it home for three months out of the year.”

McNair Field will host over 30 NCAA and high school baseball events this spring before the Owls open their 30 game home schedules on May 26.
