Forest City, NC (2 July, 2018) The Forest City Owls get on the right page for the second half of the season with a 5-2 victory of the first half South division champion Savannah Bananas from McNair Field.
"Great overall game, we got good pitching from Izzy [Israel Cordero], Troy and Minich and got some timely hits late and were able to get to their starter early and knock him out of the game early" said Head coach Matt Reed.
Savannah would strike first in the game in the top of the 5th. after a sacrifice fly RBI from Ruben Someliian and a solo home-run from Clay Dungan. The Bananas would only score in the 5th inning.
Despite giving up the home run. Israel Cordero would pitch great in his third start of the season going five innings, giving up two runs on two hits and striking out five hitters. Cordero would record his second win of the season.
The Owls would explode in their half of the 5th inning as well. After a walk to Paul Salata, a bunt single to Josh Senter and a walk to Corbin Watson, 2018 All Star Derek Perry would drive in the first run of the game after he was hit by a pitch by starting pitcher Tyler Follis. With the bases full of owls, two outs on the board, AJ Wright would come up after being sidelined the previous two games with a foot injury and drive in two runs on an RBI single to right field. The Owls would take a 3-2 lead heading into the final four innings of play.
"He [Wright] did a good job coming in after two days off and did what he does best and that is great clutch hits, which is what he has been doing game in and game out" said Reed.
"Cowboy" Troy Hall would come into pitch three amazing innings of relief where he would not give up a single run and only surrender one hit while striking out two in the process. Hall and Cordero proved why they are dominating pitchers with solid pitching through eight innings of the game.
"Anytime you can get guys on the right path that is what you want to do. The pitchers did a great job coming in and filling up the strike zone which is good to see from any pitcher" said Reed.
The Owls would get a few insurance runs in the 7th with Wright back up to the plate and 2018 All Star, Kendal McGowan on base after a walk. Wright would hit an RBI triple to right field, scoring McGowan. Wright would be driven in by catcher Mike Fitschen on an RBI single the next at bat.
With a 5-2 leads, some fireworks on the way from McNair field, Brock Minich would shoot off some fireworks of his own and get a game ending double play to preserve a 5-2 victory for the Owls.
"It was a good team win. We grinded and I am proud of our team tonight" said Reed.
The Owls will take on the Florence RedWolves from Florence, SC tomorrow and will look to win their second game of the second half season.
