The Forest City Owls fell at the hands of the Gastonia Grizzlies on Friday night 12-5, in their 2019 regular season home opener at McNair Field. It was the second consecutive high-scoring game the Owls played in, but they fell to 1-1 on the season with the loss.
Matthew Dailey allowed eight earned runs in just 3.1 innings of work, allowing seven hits. He was plagued by walks, with the Grizzlies drawing six free passes. He was relieved by Caleb Pearson in a fourth inning that saw Gastonia score seven runs. Jacob Bradley and Stephen Kight combined for five innings of one-run relief, allowing just three hits and striking out three hitters.
Gastonia put together a great night offensively, led by Jeff Syr. Syr got on base all six times he came to the plate, going four for four with two walks. Mac Starbuck collected four RBIs on two hits in the game as well.
The Forest City offense was led by Jake Lyle, who went three for five. His night included a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning. Garrett Blaylock also registered his second home run of 2019, a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Dylan Smith got the win for Gastonia, his first of the season. The Grizzles collected 12 runs on 11 hits in the game, stranding eight baserunners. The Owls scored five runs on seven hits. They committed one error, and left eight stranded. The time of the game was three hours and eleven minutes.
The Owls will battle the Grizzlies again on Saturday. The game will be held at Sims Legion Park in Gastonia, with first pitch set for 7:05 P.M.
